(Whittier, CA) Michael Seril Fitness, Inc. has established a foundation for local elementary schools to increase exercise and wellness activities among students.
The Excellence Through Exercise Foundation is an organization focused solely on increasing the amount of physical activity with elementary school students. Grants from the foundation will go towards new playground equipment and refurbishing existing school playgrounds. Elementary school faculty from around the community will also have the opportunity to receive instruction from the Michael Seril Fitness, Inc. staff on exercises and activities that can help improve child health and increase test scores from standards established by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
“This is an opportunity to help the community with an issue that needs to be brought to the forefront of our concern,” says Michael Y. Seril, recipient of the 2007 Community Leadership Award from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and founder of the Excellence Through Exercise Foundation. “The earlier children can learn to enjoy running, jumping, and being active, the more likely they are to carry that with them for the rest of their lives. Providing our children with enough playground equipment and giving them the right health & fitness information from an early age can have a huge impact on their future health and well-being.”
It’s no secret that California’s youth is suffering from health complications as result of physical inactivity. According to the California Department of Education, the 2005-2006 Fitnessgram result average for California’s fifth graders shows 188,506 out of 473,633 (39.8%) were considered unhealthy in fitness areas including amounts of fat mass and the ability to consume oxygen. According to the California Physical Fitness Report, the scores for the Whittier and Norwalk-La Mirada Unified school districts were also below the state average and well below the national average. Of the 4,475 students tested, a staggering 1,861 (41%) of students were classified as unhealthy in the same areas.
Cardiologist and member of the American Heart Association Los Angeles County Board of Directors, Freny Mody, M.D. has said, “We are deeply concerned that because of this trend today’s children may become the first in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.”
Seril is not alone in his efforts to fight childhood obesity. “I am honored to have the support of several prominent figures in the local medical and educational community in this quest to improve the health of our elementary schools,” he says. “With their support, this foundation has the potential to inspire a lot of people to live a healthier lifestyle for years to come.”
These supportive board members include: Kimberly Faulkinbury, BA, William Stimmler, M.D., Bharat Patel, M.D., Jeffrey Winston, MD and Jean Maddox, EdD., principal of Foster Road Elementary School in La Mirada.
